The Philadelphia Bail Fund pays bail at the earliest possible moment for people who are indigent and cannot afford bail — ideally before they are transferred from their holding cell to jail. They also educate policymakers and lobby for reform.
About
The goal of the Philadelphia Bail Fund is to eliminate money bail in Philadelphia. Ending the injustice of money bail requires shifting Philadelphia’s bail system from one that is based on wealth to a fairer and more effective system based on a presumption of release before trial, except in the most exceptional circumstances. To the broader goal of ending cash bail in Philadelphia, they have been working closely with other local organizers to put pressure on the courts, the DA and the Mayor to release people held on cash bail. They have begun to respond to this pressure by releasing some people and expect that any changes in policy that occur during this public health crisis will help pave the way for more lasting change.
