Advancing Innovative Strategies for Change in Behavioral Health

Grant Activity: Current Activity Impacting Communities

Check Up, Check Out: ShopRite’s Guide to Wellness

After several months of implementation strategy sessions the Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation is proud to announce that Wellness at Your Fingertips, the 2014 Design Challenge winning submission, is now available for public use in the QCare Retail Clinic inside North Philadelphia’s Shoprite of Fox Street. Wellness at Your Fingertips is a tablet based screening tool used to identify signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions such as Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Eating Disorders, Bi-Polar Disorder and Alcohol misuse. The integration of this tool into a retail clinic will mark the first time in the United States that a retail clinic has begun comprehensive screening for mental health conditions.

2800 Fox Street Philadelphia PA 19129

When:   Tuesday August 5, 2014 10-10:30am

Who:      Dr. Arthur Evans, Commissioner, Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health

Donna Torrisi, Executive Director, Family Practice & Counseling Network

Candice Porter, Executive Director, Screening for Mental Health, Inc.

The specific tool that will be implemented is an evidence based screening tool designed by Screening for Mental Health, Inc. (SMH) of Wellesley, Massachusetts and has been used over three million times since it’s development in 1991. SMH partnered with the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS) to create a version of this tool that is catered for Philadelphia residents by including local resources such as Crisis Response Centers, Inpatient and Outpatient Providers. To properly support the implementation of the screening tool and resources, SMH and DBHIDS have conducted intensive staff trainings for QCare and Shoprite personnel.

The Foundation has already begun the next critical step in this process by establishing key evaluation metrics that will help determine Wellness at Your Fingertips effectiveness in the community. The evaluation metrics are based off measures currently used by SMH which include, but are not limited to, demographics of the screener, number of screenings taken and how long (if at all) does it take to complete the screening. The Foundation is also building out the implementation process and cost breakdown for interested retail clinics and health clinics in and around Philadelphia. Lastly, the Foundation will continue to work with DBHIDS and SMH to build the second iteration of the Kiosk which could include e-mailed results, more detailed evaluation metrics and potentially an audio component for the visually impaired.
